WE ASKED:

What's the most terrifying thing you've done while travelling?

KATE GAZZARD @kate_gazzard

Unfortunately, I'm afraid of heights, creepy crawlies, snakes, bears (any animal that can kill you really), enclosed spaces, public speaking, flying (ironic I know) and the list goes on.

So, my answer to this question is a bit tame (read: lame). I'd agreed to go turtle spotting with my sister during a holiday to the Maldives.

I thought we'd be snorkelling over a cute little reef, but we were heading for the open ocean – cue my thalassophobia.

I could barely get off the boat. We only spent around 15 minutes in the water before I convinced myself Jaws was about to appear. And we didn't even see any turtles.

Out of the many misfortunes that have occurred over the years, one of the most memorable is when I was in Iceland.

I went out during the long polar night to observe the famous Northern Lights. We left Reykjavik around 11 pm and after about an hour of driving in the snowy countryside, we came across a polar storm of winds and snow. The bus was stuck for hours at the mercy of the winds, making it sway like a tin box.

When the storm subsided, we were rescued by the Icelandic civil protection team and slowly evacuated in small groups. They dropped us off in a remote village where we could finally enjoy some shut eye...

Two words. Flew Spirit Airlines.

Nah, just kidding.

I've hiked ice caverns, river rafted, polar plunged, and motorcycled across India. I've even eaten ceviche from a street cart in Jakarta – at midday.

But, without question, the most terrifying thing I've ever done while travelling was climbing that damn Via Ferrata in Telluride. If I ever see Tom Watkinson (the guy who told me it was fun), well, let's just say he better run. And fast.

Hanging onto small metal rungs that may or may not be bolted securely into a cliff while the wind tries to yeet you into oblivion? Yeah, so fun, Tom.
