WE ASKED:
WHAT'S THE BEST SWIMMING POOL YOU'VE EVER BEEN IN?
DEBORAH DICKSON - SMITH @deborahdicksonsmith
La Piscine Naturelle d’Oro, or in English, the less poetic-sounding: Oro Bay Swimming Pool, is a natural swimming pool, and it’s a short walk from Le Meridien Ill des Pins, in New Caledonia. This coral basin is sheltered from the currents by a rocky coral wall, surrounded by New Caledonia pines and a beautiful white sand beach. The water in the pool is crystal clear and populated by schools of multicoloured fish. The best time to swim is at dawn, where you’ll likely have the pool to yourself – just you, the pine trees and all those fish.

Back in 2014 I hightailed it over to Nusa Penida for a well-needed break from Bali antics. There were hardly any other travellers so I jumped on the back of a local moto and ended up swimming in a rock pool, that was handing onto the side of a cliff, that was overlooking the ocean, that was fed by a waterfall. If you ever want to go, just google maps 'Peguyangan Waterfall'. You're welcome.

In Kruger National Park, South Africa’s famous wildlife haven, there is an old, disused rail bridge which once connected trains across the Sabie River on their way to Mozambique. Several years ago, a disused train was converted into a hotel and placed back on the old bridge. A small swimming pool hangs off the side of Kruger Shalati, allowing you to float along while crocodiles and hippos splash about directly beneath you, and the pleasant call of yellow-billed oxpeckers pierce the otherwise still sky. And I’m not even an animal person.
get in the know Indonesia is home to the world's largest flower—the Rafflesia arnoldii. It's truly ginormous, weighing in at a whopping 11kgs.
